My old friends from Ithaca rolled back through town a few weeks back, so I had another opportunity to record one of the most talented American reggae acts around. On May 17, 2006, John Brown’s Body played live at the historic Great American Music Hall. The venue is a classic hall with acoustics all it’s own and the band filled the room with some thumping bass for sure. We were a little disappointed when the venue denied the band a soundboard feed of their own music (they said it required pre-approval and a $1,000 fee), so that squelched our hopes of pulling a matrix of the board mixed with our ambient mics like we did previously at the Warfield. So, this recording is a classic audience tape with all the reverb and boom you could ever want in a reggae recording! Also, thanks to the band’s generous open taping policy, which permits non-commerical sharing of their live performances among fans, you can enjoy the entire show by clicking the links below or by downloading them directly from Archive.org.

It’s finally time for our fourth segment dedicated to San Francisco’s NoisePop 2006 indie music festival. This time we’re posting a short sample from the headlining set of Rogue Wave playing at Bimbo’s 365 Club on March 30th. They put the final stake in an incredible night of music that included sets from Scrabbel, the Octopus Project, and Aqueduct. Thankfully for their fans, Rogue Wave has an explicit open taping policy that permits recording and trading of their live shows for non-commercial personal use. This means you can stream or download the entire recording I made at Bimbo’s using the links below or directly from The Live Music Archive. So enjoy the concert, and make sure to support the band by purchasing their latest album and going to see them live. And don’t forget to check back later because we’re still working on a couple more posts from NoisePop ‘06.

Here comes our fifth post related to San Francisco’s NoisePop 2006 indie music festival, and I’ve saved some of the best for last. This time we’re giving you a taste of the headlining solo acoustic performance from Britt Daniel of Spoon playing live at the Swedish American Hall on March 29th. Meric Long, Martyn Leaper, and Laura Veirs opened, and Britt sure put on one hell of a closer. He played 20 songs in total, including a couple with a boom box as a background track, and two covers of John Clayton and John Lennon songs. Thanks to Spoon and Britt’s generous open taping policy, you can listen to my recording of his entire performance from start to finish in all of it’s high fidelity glory at the links below or directly from The Live Music Archive. If all goes well, I’ll have one last NoisePop post in the next week, but in the meantime, don’t forget that this recording is intended for non-commercial personal use only. Also, please support the artists by purchasing their albums and seeing them live next time they come through your town!

My friend Ian and I went to check out the famous Dirty Dozen Brass Band play live at The Independent in San Francisco on Friday night. This old-school New Orleans band treated SF to two sets and four hours worth of brass-kickin’ music! They talked about the Katrina disaster and played a diverse mix of songs, including several long jam sessions, a bunch of originals, a cover of the Bill Withers tune Use Me Up, the New Orleans mainstay When the Saints Come Marching In, and we even heard a touch of Prince’s Purple Rain mixed in with the finale at the end — which went on for more than thirty minutes with hoards of fans dancing on stage. It was an incredible night of horns with a ton of energy from the fans in the crowd. There’s no doubt that it was a night to remember, and because of the generosity of the artists being a trade-friendly band, Ian and I were given VIP access and permission to make an audience recording of the whole four-hour concert. You can stream or download my entire recording at the links below or directly from The Live Music Archive. I also shot a very small amount of video that I’ve posted below for your listening and viewing pleasure (please excuse the blurry vibrations, the subwoofer is so powerful at The Indy that every downbeat caused the balcony to literally shake). So, go ahead an enjoy a little bit of a fantastic night of music, and if you like what you hear, make sure to support the band by buying their albums and attending their next live performance in SF.

Last weekend I had the pleasure of getting the royal treatment of a backstage pass, soundboard access, and permission to record the reggae band John Brown’s Body at the Warfield in San Francisco. I grew up with two members of the band back in Ithaca years ago, and they put on a great show opening up for Slightly Stoopid on Saturday night.
I sat right next to their sound engineer and recorded a soundboard feed directly into my laptop, while also simultaneously recording a second feed from a stereo pair of microphones that I clamped to the balcony into a portable hard disk. This was possible because JBB is a “taper-friendly” band that permits personal use and non-commercial trading of their live performances between fans. Later, at home, I mixed the two stereo tracks together into what is often called a “matrix” that turned out to be an incredibly nice live recording of the event. The entire concert recording I made can be streamed as MP3s at the links below or you can download the high-quality 16-bit WAV masters directly from The Live Music Archive. I also shot some video and snapped some pictures from the balcony with my digital camera. Their performance was awesome, and the crowd was loving every minute of it!
After they finished their set, I broke down my gear and headed backstage to hang out with them in the Warfield’s green rooms. It was great seeing them and reminiscing about old times. It was also quite an experience hanging out backstage while watching the headliner rock the house while standing right on the far side of the stage with them. I could really feel the incredible vibe coming from the thousands of fans dancing and screaming out in the audience, and for just a moment or two, I got a sense for what it must be like to perform out in front of so many raving people!
So, I encourage you to click on the images above and video links below to view the full-size pictures and to watch the eight-minute video I threw together from the event. The video was created from a combination of the audio, pictures, and video I recorded that night. Can you believe I shot this video not with a video camera, but with a super-tiny STILL camera? Anyway, I hope you take some time to enjoy these memories from the event. Lord knows I had a great time, and before I forget, I’d like to give a major thanks to my old friends in the band for treating me so well at the gig!
