Darren Johnston Quintet Live at the Red Poppy Art House

Recorded by BayTaper on February 26th, 2007

I was psyched to receive an invite to record and photograph the Darren Johnston Quintet playing at one of my favorite jazz venues in San Francisco, the Red Poppy Art House, on February 16, 2007. On this night, the group featured a suite of new original compositions by trumpeter and band leader Darren Johnston. Darren was joined by the amazing Sheldon Brown on bass clarinet and tenor sax and the rippin’ Ben Goldberg on clarinet, and they were backed by the rhythm section of Smith Dobson. on drums and Devin Hoff on bass. These guys are always playing gigs around town in one form or another, and it was great to hear them play this new material live before they head off to immortalize it in an upcoming CD release. So, I highly recommend you to preview these sample audio tracks and photos from this outstanding performance at the Red Poppy.

well, first of all, i goofed up the stars thing and dont know how to adjust it. i surely meant to give this recording more than 3 stars.

the compositions sound wonderful- the room really lends itself to the music too. i am always looking for that 25th hour and here it is. the compositions are beautifully released by all of the musicians– i am so sorry to have missed the evening.

bill- you are too great. thanks for all of your support of the bay area jazz musicians- these archive documents/recordings are very important to the history of this music on the west coast. without your help, we would be far less equiped to show/play the story. i am sure gratitude will come your way for many, many years to come.
